Investigating the Legacy benefits

Posted: March 27, 2012 in General

After dragging my sorry butt to Leve 29 and managing to kill off Skavak in the Smuggler Chapter One, I finally got a look at the new Legacy window.

Family Tree

The first part of the Legacy system is the Family Tree. As you can see, my family tree isn’t that fleshed out yet, but mostly its a system of connections.
The Legacy Family Tree

Global Unlocks

The part of the Legacy system that most of the playerbase will be interested in though, is the Global Unlocks. These are a series of abilities, bonuses, and unlocked options that allow players to access more in the game. The system implemented in 1.2 provides for 4 categories of Global Unlocks. As a special note, I’ll list the Companion unlocks separately as they work slightly differently.
The categories of unlocks are:

  • Imperial Classes
  • Republic Classes
  • Species
  • Other
  • Companions

Note: For clarity, an “Unlock” requires non-monetary elements to access. A “Purchase” requires credits and a legacy level. You can either do one or the other where available, but both are not required. Some items are only accessible through one or the other means though.

Companion Unlocks

Companions have unlocks too. However, unlike class unlocks, the companion type is the main differentiation between the unlocks. Different classes companions will unlock the same boosts, dependent on the style of the companion. In order to unlock a companion’s boost, you must complete all conversations and quests for this companion, meaning 10,000 affection and everything they ask.

Coming Soon

As if that wasn’t enough to consider, BioWare has also taunted us with new Legacy abilities coming in Patch 1.3 including:

  • XP increases,
  • Increased Affection Gains,
  • Increased Critical Crafting chances,
  • Faster Junk selling,
  • Increased sprint speeds,
  • Speeders at Level 10,
  • Field Repair Droids,
  • Higher health when respawning at a med center,
  • In-The-Field Respecs, and
  • Field Mailboxes.

Conclusions

The first thing that comes to mind is that I need 16 character slots. Just so that I can take advantage of the unlocks that come from levelling 1 of every race and 1 of every class to 50. The second thing is that Legacy, even at its cheapest will be EXPENSIVE. To complete everything, you’ll obviously need 1 of every class, and 1 of each type of companion maxxed, as well as 1 of each species. Beyond that, if you were to purchase all elements that don’t have an Unlock Requirement, it would cost 13,200,000 credits. If you include the other purchasable items, it comes to a total of 27,015,000 credits to buy everything, not to mention you’ll still require Level 25 Legacy, for the GTN.

So for those who haven’t seen it before, what do you think of the Legacy bonuses, and … are they worth it?

What i am curious about is, if i unlock a species (e. g. Twi’lek), are all color patterns and cosmetics for the new character available, wich were not before the unlock? I would realy like to play a red colored twi’lek on republikc’s side wich is just not possible yet.

By the way, thanks for this preview on the legacy system. I already read the preview von dulfy but i think this one gives more accurate informations. Good work

  3. Dz0 says:

As someone who has been slacking off on playtime while i wait to see how this legacy and 1.2 patch pans out, its a mixed bag.
On one hand, im tempering any dissapointments by realizing this is a first pass, and that the legacy system is intended to be an ongoing work to keep me interested in my characters and the game.
On the other, a lot of this stuff is underwhelming and as someone mentioned seems like an oddly implemented money sink than anything else. Regardless of how it will improve.
I keep seeing all this dev talk and its potential…but if this is the 1.2 rollout…then it seems we may have to wait a bit longer to realize the potential better.

Bottom line is its enough for me to want to pop back on when it hits and see some changes…but i dont know if it is enough to keep me playing or even have the desire to level my legacy at all.

    Thanks for the info.
